It has been five days since we have been back home and I am still feeling extremely grateful. My experience in Nicaragua was one I will never forget. If you have ever been to a third world country, you will understand, first hand, what it is like. It is a whole different world. I never really realized how much I have here in America until this trip.
We spent a week working in the village of Santa Juana, Nicaragua drilling for clean water. The weather was around 100 degrees and humid. It was so hot, I will never truly understand how the villagers went without it all these years.
During the drilling process, we hit a very tough rock called bluestone. We would just sit around the drill and wait, as it drilled only an inch an hour. We prayed and prayed that God would break through the rock, so that clean water could be gifted to this town in need.
Throughout the week our team met with the mothers and children of the village to teach them proper hygiene, such as how to brush their teeth and how and when to wash their hands. Knowing that they would soon have a clean water source, we needed to make sure that they understood how to prevent the spread of germs and cross-contamination. We also taught some fun bible lessons and played games with the children. We wanted to show them God’s love by interacting with them in a fun-loving and caring way.
As a team, we decided to give up our “free day” to continue drilling. We did not want to leave the village without giving it our all. On our last day, Friday, we hooked up the air compressor to find that we DID hit water! What an incredible feeling.
The town gathered around on our final day, dressed in their “Sunday’s best”, to celebrate! This village had been waiting a lifetime, and on that day it all changed. The wait was finally over. The joy glowed on their faces, they were so thankful.
I met a lot of great people during the week and built some great friendships that will last a lifetime with people from Liquid Church. Thank you for all your prayers during this time… they worked! We are so happy to able to celebrate CLEAN WATER!
