Being a first-time mom isn’t easy. In fact, it can be hard, real hard. But it is one of the most gratifying things I have ever experienced. There are times you may have felt defeated, beaten up or wanting to call it quits. You are not alone. We’ve all been there. But today, I am here to offer you some encouragement. To help you stop worrying about the little things and focusing on the bigger picture. You are a mom, you are awesome.
Advice every first-time mom needs to hear (at least once)
1. ENJOY THE MOMENT
Put down your phone and just be in the moment with your child. Kids grow up fast, too fast. Don’t regret not spending the time that they so desperately desire from you. Be more present and you won’t miss a thing.
2. DON’T COMPARE YOUSELF
Do not, I repeat do not compare yourself to other moms out there. Every mother is different and has their own parenting style. Just because one mom chose to breastfeed but you chose formula, or one mom is head of the PTA (and has 4 kids) while you are struggling with just one… it’s OK. You are you and they are them. (forget the grammar here, you get my point) Don’t compare yourself to the Joneses. You are doing just fine.
3. STOP PLANNING
Things change when you have kids. I used to always be early, now I make it just ‘on time’. Take each moment and go with the flow- you have to with kids. There will be inconveniences and interrupts in your day. (PLAN) for them π
4. TAKE A BREAK
You need to rest. Take turns- let your partner feed the baby this time. A friend offers to watch your little one so you can get your nails done? Go… you will need a little “me time”- frequently.
5. TRUST YOUR GUT
That little feeling inside your belly that keeps you up at night- yup… go with it! If something feels right or even wrong, trust your instinct. Mother’s intuition wins.
6. IT’S OKAY TO SAY “NO”
Can’t make it to little Johnny’s play date because you have laundry, cleaning and need to still cook dinner? It is okay to say “no”. You can’t do everything. Although you are super mom, you need to be in charge of your plans and you know what works best for your family.
7. GET OUT OF THE HOUSE
Gather your girlies and get out the heck out! Finally time for some R&R. Trip to the spa, yes please? You need it and deserve it.
8. FIND YOUR PEEPS
Find your circle- your ‘go to’ people. The ones you need to vent to and/or to bounce off ideas from. Find your closest mommy friends and make a coffee date. They can totally relate to it all.
9. IT GETS EASIER
Although this whole ‘mommy thing’ is new to you, I promise it gets easier. Day by day, hour by hour, you are turning into a smarter, more intelligent and even AWESOME-ER momma.
10. PRACTICE GRATITUDE
Be grateful for the little things. Be thankful for the moments of rest that you do get. Be happy that your husband took out the trash and cleaned the dishes for you. Be grateful that even though you are up at all hours of the night, you have a child to call yours- not everyone can say that <3
